Vernon Gholston (born June 5, 1986 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American football linebacker for the New York Jets of the National Football League. He played college football at Ohio State and was drafted sixth overall by the Jets in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Gholston attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit. As a senior, he was an All-State honoree as an offensive guard while racking up 75 tackles and six sacks on defense. Gholston, whose father was deceased, was mentored by Thomas Wilcher. Gholston's mother's name is Cheryl Gholston. Gholston played did not play (at linebacker) until his senior year. Interested in bodybuilding and working out, he bought fitness magazines and worked out in his basement before he was a teenager.
Gholston redshirted in 2005 after suffering a broken left hand in the season opener. In his freshman season he played defensive end, though recruited as a linebacker. He eventually moved up to the number 2 spot behind Mike Kudla.
