The food product was originally invented in Australia in the 1920s by Bennison Osborne. After successfully launching Weet-Bix in Australia and New Zealand, Osborne and his partner Malcolm Macfarlane sold the Australasian rights to the Sanitarium Health Food Company and decided to expand into South Africa and Britain. Osborne, MacFarlane founded the British & African Cereal Company Pty. Ltd. in 1932 in partnership with Frank George who offered them use of a disused flour mill in exchange for shares in the company.
