White locus

True "white" horses, which are those that carry one copy of the White or "W" gene, are rare. Most horses that are commonly referred to as "white" are actually gray horses whose hair coats are completely white. The dominant allele is homogygous lethal: in other words, two copies of the White (WW) gene cause the fetus to die early in gestation.
