Part of the base is a census-designated place (CDP); it had a population of 3,814 at the 2000 census. The host wing is the 509th Bomb Wing (509 BW) of the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), which operates the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Also located at Whiteman as a tenant wing is the 442d Fighter Wing (442 FW), an Air Combat Command-gained unit of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), operating the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
