Wheaton was born in Burbank, California, to Debbie (née O’Connor), an actress, and Richard William Wheaton, Jr., a medical specialist. He has a brother, Jeremy, and a sister, Amy, who both appeared, uncredited, in the "When the Bough Breaks" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
He states he is "not a religious person" who is "not quite an atheist, but I'm certainly not a theist, either. Friends describe me as an agnostic Taoist, whatever that means."
