Wonder Acres is a settlement in Kern County, California, USA, 4 miles (6 km) east of Cache Creek, at the intersection of State Route 14 and California City Blvd.
It began when Mr. Wonder drilled for oil (ca 1950) and found water, subdivided the land north of California City Blvd. and east of State Route 14, piped water to five acre plots, and sold them.
Years later (in the 1960's) Mr. Robert W. Shaneyfelt made the settlement name well known when he painted the name of the settlement on the community water tank along California City Blvd.
The main street in Wonder Acres is currently named "Janice Street". Margaret E. Shaneyfelt was primarily responsible for negotiating with the affected parties to arrive with this as an agreeable compromise.
Most of the late part of the 20th century, Wonder Acres was in the Mojave Unified School District, the Tehachapi Cemetery District, yet it was not included in either area's telephone area code. Its area code was the same as California City. Wonder...
