Metallica announced the first batch of dates on August 11, 2008. Three extra dates were added on August 27 in Los Angeles, Chicago and Newark and the first 11 dates of a European leg were added on October 14 and October 15, 2008, with more dates announced throughout the following days. The support bands are changing throughout the tour. All October and November shows featured The Sword and Down. All December shows featured Lamb of God (except for the two shows at The Forum, December 17 and December 18, where Machine Head supported due to Lamb of God being banned from the venue), and The Sword and also Up In Arms.
