The title "World's tallest freestanding structure on land" is given to the tallest, self-supporting, man-made structure; that is, it is not held up by external supports or guy-wire, for example. The title is currently held by the CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which, at a height of 553.3 metre (1,815 ft), has held the record consecutively since 1976.
The Pharos (Lighthouse) of Alexandria, built in the 3rd century BC, is estimated to have been between 115 - 135 metres (383 - 440 ft) tall. In the 3rd century, the Jetavanaramaya stupa in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka was built to 122 metres (400 ft) tall. Due to discrepancies on reports of heights, both structures made up the world's tallest non-pyramid structures for more than a millennium.
The Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is slated to surpass the CN Tower in 2008 and according to its developer it will be over 700m.
