X-Wing Collector Series was the first launch of Windows 95-based versions of both Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: TIE Fighter, released in 1998. The games were revamped with a Direct3D-powered game engine, from Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, which featured a significant improvement in image quality over the older gouraud shaded, low-resolution graphics of the original releases. Unfortunately, with the switch to Windows, the games lost their innovative interactive IMUSE MIDI soundtracks, because the complicated IMUSE system was not Windows compatible at the time and it was deemed too large of an effort to convert it. The MIDI soundtrack was thus replaced with Red Book CD audio tracks, which consisted of simple looped movie soundtrack.
