Jardin was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 5, 1972. Her father, artist Glenn B. Hamm Jr., died in August 1980 of ALS. She left home at age 14, but remained in school in Richmond. Xeniflores is not her given name, but rather a nickname that stuck during her travels through Mexico and Guatemala. For some time after she returned, she used the name Xeniflores Jardin Hamm and now uses a shortened version, Xeni Jardin.
