The Bronx is the northernmost of New York City's five boroughs and the newest of New York State's 62 counties. It is located northeast of Manhattan and south of Westchester County. The Bronx is the only borough situated primarily on the North American mainland (while the other four are on islands). In 2008, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the borough's population on July 1, 2007 was 1,373,659, ranking fourth of the five boroughs in population and area, and third in density.
