Content

Project Runeberg is an initiative patterned after Project Gutenberg that publishes freely available electronic versions of books significant to the culture and history of the Nordic countries. The Project began archiving Nordic-language literature in December 1992, but today also has graphical facsimiles of old works, sheet music, and Latin works by Nordic authors. It was founded by Lars Aronsson and is hosted by Lysator. Project Runeberg is named after Finland's national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. The name also has a double meaning as Rune (letter in the Runic alphabet) and berg (mountain) can, in most of the Nordic languages, be translated loosely to "Mountain of letters". Finally, the name is similar to "Gutenberg".
