Boaz is a city in Etowah and Marshall Counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is part of the 'Gadsden, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area'. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,411. According to the 2005 U.S. Census estimates, the city had a population of 7,893. Boaz is nationally known as an outlet shopping destination. It is the "Shop 'til you drop" Capital of Alabama.
A post office was established in Boaz in 1887. The first postmaster, G.M.E. Mann, named the town after the biblical character Boaz. The name was suggested by his father-in-law Henry McCord of Albertville. Boaz was incorporated in 1897. In October 2007, a referendum that proposed the annexation of the Mountainboro by the city of Boaz passed by a one-vote margin. The result of the referendum was challenged, and legal activities delayed further action until 2009. At that time, Etowah County Circuit Judge David Kimberley upheld the result of the 2007 referendum, and Mountainboro was annexed by the city on August 14, 2009.
