White River is a city in Mellette County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 598 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Mellette County. White River is located at 43°34′10″N 100°44′46″W / 43.56944°N 100.74611°W / 43.56944; -100.74611 (43.569438, -100.746161). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land. White River has been assigned the ZIP code 57579 and the FIPS place code 71340.
