Ilayaraaja ( ￠ﾮﾇ￠ﾮﾳ￠ﾯﾈ￠ﾮﾯ￠ﾮﾰ￠ﾮﾾ￠ﾮﾜ￠ﾮﾾ in Tamil) (born June 2, 1943) is an Indian film composer. He has composed over 5000 songs and provided background music for more than 840 Indian films in various languages in a career spanning more than 30 years. He has won the Indian National Film Awards for best music composition thrice. He had completed a course in classical guitar (higher local) with the Trinity College of Music in London. Ilaiyaraja was born in a rural family in Pannaipuram near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. His career in music composition was launched in 1976 when he began composing film music in the South Indian film industry. One of his earliest film music compositions, the soundtrack for the Tamil-language film Annakkili, earned him recognition for his successful fusion of Tamil folk music and popular Tamil film music . Ilaiyaraja has gone on to compose in a gamut of musical styles: folk, disco, pop (ranging from jazz-inflected tunes to acoustic guitar-based Western folk), Broadway, sad songs, and Indian classical (pure classicals and classical-pop hybrids).
