Jigme Wangchuk (Dzongkha:, Wylie: 'jigs med dbang phyug; 1905 – March 30, 1952) was the second Maharaja and Dragon King of Bhutan from August 21, 1926 until his death. He was the eldest son of Dragon King Maharaja Ugyen Wangchuk and was educated in English, Hindi and Buddhist literature. Under his reign, Bhutan continued to maintain almost complete isolation from the outside world, maintaining only limited relations with the United Kingdom, that colonial power in India responsible for foreign affairs. This responsibility was transferred to India in 1949, shortly after India gained independence. He was succeeded by his son, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.
