Washington's crossing of the Delaware, occurring on December 25, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, was the first move in a surprise attack against the Hessian forces at Trenton, New Jersey in the Battle of Trenton. With the army safely in Pennsylvania, Washington's next task was to feed and house them and to plan his next move.
