Ajax was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, foaled in 1934 at the Widden Stud in the Denman, New South Wales area and by the great racehorse and sire, Heroic out of Medmenham (IRE) (by Prince Galahad) who was a race winner in Australia after her importation. He is best remembered for winning 18 races in a row, and for losing in the 1939 Rawson Stakes, when at 40/1 on, in a three horse race where he went down to Spear Chief. He won the Memsie Stakes three times and the 1938 Cox Plate. Ajax's record was 46 starts for 36 wins, 7 seconds and 2 thirds for prize money of £40,250. He started at 40/1 on in the Rawson Stakes where he ran second. Ajax is still the shortest-priced favourite ever beaten in Australia. At stud, in the upper Hunter Valley Ajax was a prolific sire who produced nine individual stakes winners including the good horses Achilles (1950 AJC Epsom Handicap) and dual Derby winner Magnificent (1945 AJC and VRC Derbies).
