In the season premiere episode, Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the case of a city health inspector, found murdered in mysterious circumstances in an elevator. At first, the murder appears to be drugs-related, until Goren and Eames look below the surface. The detectives interview the victim's brother, a recently widowed medical examiner with a young daughter, as they learn that Nicole Wallace, Goren's long-standing nemesis, is romantically involved with the man. Then, they fear that the man's little girl might be Wallace's next victim. Detective Logan joins the Major Case squad this time, but he is not pleased with being relegated to the background while Goren and Eames led the investigation, so Deakins makes an effort to find a partner for him.
