HD Theater is a high-definition television network from Discovery Communications, Inc., the owner of the Discovery Channel. It launched nation-wide in 2002 as Discovery HD Theater and is now the most widely distributed basic cable HD network in the United States. The network was rebranded to its current name on September 22, 2007, due to Discovery Network launching HD simulcasts of the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, and the Science Channel. HD Theater has been a pioneer in development of programming specifically oriented to the HD format.
The channel was launched in Latin America on April 15, 2009.
In addition, numerous specials have been produced for the network, many that have already premiered on the Discovery Channel (Motorcycle Mania 3: Jesse James Rides Again for example).
The channel launched on 1 June 2002 as "Discovery HD Theater". The logo and name was used from launch to September 22, 2007. On 22 September 2007, the channel was relaunched with the "Discovery" part of the name dropped, simply naming it "HD Theater". The logo was changed because Discovery Channel was launching HD versions of channels like Discovery HD, Animal Planet HD, TLC HD and also Science
