Anne-Marie Duff (born 8 October 1970 in Chiswick, West London) is an English actress best known for playing Fiona Gallagher in Shameless, and Elizabeth I in The Virgin Queen. One of two children born to Brendan and Mary Duff (née Doherty), Duff has an older brother called Eddie. Her parents were working-class Irish immigrants who met in Shepherd's Bush during the 1960s. Her father, originally from Meath, is a painter and decorator; her mother, from Donegal, worked in a shoe shop. Growing up on a council estate in Hayes End, Hillingdon, Duff was generally shy and introverted. When Roald Dahl visited her primary school, she decided she was going to become a writer. Although her parents were pleased at her creativity, they were also keen for her to be more outgoing. When she was 11 they encouraged her to attend a local drama group, which brother Eddie had joined a couple of years earlier. She enjoyed the experience and was later involved with the Argosy Players amateur theatre company in her mid-teens. Duff attended Mellow Lane School, where she stayed on to take A-Levels, before applying to London's Drama Centre — now part of the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design of the
