Jack Fisk, service number 245A-34DC, was originally a Lieutenant Colonel (later Colonel) aboard the Battlestar Pegasus and was the Executive Officer (XO) of the vessel, serving under the command of Admiral Helena Cain. Fisk was first encountered when the refugee fleet discovered the Pegasus, learning the ship had survived the Cylon attack on the colonies. Fisk portrayed himself as a "by-the-book" officer, who was fearful of his superior, Cain.
As the crews from both Battlestars began to interact, Fisk soon befriended his Galactica counterpart Colonel Saul Tigh. A rather inebriated Fisk told Tigh that Admiral Cain had shot her original XO in cold blood for daring to question an order. This led to Fisk's promotion to XO.
