Rodriguez has gone on record as saying that it would not be a word-for-word, panel-for-panel translation of a specific story from the comic (as was Sin City), but rather an adaptation of the titular character and his world (similar to Guillermo del Toro's film Hellboy, based on Mike Mignola's comic).
Allred had received several offers for a low-budget adaptation of Madman in the early 1990s. In 1998, he gave the film rights to Robert RodrÃguez who had the intention of shooting it soon after.
