Federal Correctional Institution, Cumberland in Cumberland, Maryland is a federal prison that houses medium security male offenders. The FCI has an adjacent minimum security satellite camp that houses male offenders. FCI Cumberland is located in western Maryland, 130 miles (210 km) northwest of Washington, DC and 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Interstate 68, off State Route 51 South. FCI Cumberland is the location of the federal automobile license plate manufacturing center, producing all federal government plates. Jack Abramoff is one of the more notable inmates of the minimum-security Cumberland Federal Prison Camp as inmate 27593-112. The Justice Department requested that he serve his sentence for the SunCruz Casinos case there so as to be accessible to agents in Washington for cooperation in further investigations. Another well-known inmate housed at FCI Cumberland is former Green Beret Army doctor Jeffrey MacDonald. In 1979 MacDonald was given three consecutive life sentences for the February 1970 murders of his wife and two children.
