Content

Veronica Prego is an Argentine-American medical doctor who became infected with HIV in 1983 when she pricked her finger with an infected needle at Brooklyn's Kings County Hospital Center. This was the first time such an incident involving a doctor had been documented, at least in the United States. Veronica Prego filed a lawsuit accusing Kings County Hospital Center of negligence after she tested positive for HIV as a result of having punctured her finger on a contaminated syringe needle that she claimed an intern had left on a patient's bed. The intern denied the charge. In March 1990, just before summations to the jury would have been held, she suddenly dropped her lawsuit, settling out-of-court for an undisclosed amount.
