"Space" was the ninth episode of the first season of The X-Files science-fiction television series created by Chris Carter. It deals with non- corporeal extraterrestrial life.
A mysterious force is sabotaging a space launch program which leads directly back to the commander of the team, who once claimed to have seen an alien in space while witnessing Mars from Earth orbit.
The image of a face on Mars surface at the beginning of the episode was inspired by the famous photo taken by Viking 1 on July 25, 1976 on the Cydonia Mensae region of planet Mars. However, the photo in the episode is a fake one.
The episode's plot is close to the Stephen King short story "I Am the Doorway", published in 1978. In it, an astronaut returns from a mission to Mars possessed by an alien entity that makes the astronaut go on a murderous rampage.
Space has the dubious distinction of being considered one of the worst X Files episodes by fans and makes many "worst X Files episodes" lists.
