Because the band performs, records, and releases their material outside of the confines of the mass media, Iskra are considered part of the anarchist underground punk musical tradition, which emerged in the late 1970s with bands like Crass and Discharge. By blending elements of crust punk, black metal, powerviolence, grindcore, and thrash metal, Iskra say they have created their own subgenre, "blackened crust." Obvious musical influences include Slayer, Bathory, and Amebix. The band includes former members of the earlier anarchist punk band Black Kronstadt, who in later years also described their music as "blackened crust."
