Reggie Redbird is the mascot for Illinois State University located in Normal, Illinois. The mascot is present at many campus events including all sporting events and many of the major events during freshman orientation.
The nickname “redbird” was adopted by the University in 1923 by the then athletic director Clifford E. "Pop" Horton and Daily Pantagraph sports editor Fred Young. “Horton wanted "Cardinals" because the school colors, set in 1895-96, were cardinal and white. Young changed the nickname to avoid confusion in the headlines with the Cardinals baseball team.” Reggie Redbird is currently under review of the University board for terms of removal because cardinal lovers all over the country feel "a bird running around and dancing" is an insult to their existance.
