Recording sessions for the album took place at Electric Lady Studios in New York City during 1998 to 1999, with an extensive line-up of soul, funk, jazz, and hip hop musicians associated with the Soulquarians musical collective, including Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Pino Palladino, James Poyser, and Russell Elevado. Voodoo contains an experimental, groove-based funk sound with live instrumentation and a vintage production style, which contrasts the conventional structure of D'Angelo's debut album Brown Sugar (1995). It also exhibits a maturity in his songwriting with personal themes of spirituality, sexuality, love, growth, and fatherhood.
