In 1997, Quicksand reunited and embarked on a successful tour in 1998 with The Deftones. Towards the end of the year, they entered Carriage House Studios in nearby Stamford, Connecticut to begin work on a follow-up to Manic Compression, but tensions within the band caused them to split up for good.
Frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, coming from a New York Hardcore background (having been the main creative force behind the Gorilla Biscuits, as well as playing bass in Youth of Today), recruited some of the scene's more prominent musicians to complete the Quicksand line-up: Tom Capone was the founder of Long Island's Beyond and had previously played in a later line-up of Bold, writing their more rock-oriented "Looking Back" album.
