Free Press is a book publishing imprint of Simon and Schuster. It was founded by Jeremiah Kaplan (1926-1993) and Charles Liebman in 1947 and was devoted to sociology and religion titles. It was headquartered in Glencoe, Illinois, where it was known as The Free Press of Glencoe. The Free Press was sold in 1960 and was then merged into the Macmillan Publishing Company. In the 1990s, under the direction of Erwin Glikes, the Free Press became a publisher of politically conservative works, including The Bell Curve, Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man, David Brock's The Real Anita Hill, and Robert Bork's The Tempting of America. Glikes's success at the Free Press spear-headeded a trend toward conservative imprints, such as Judith Regan's Regan Books, Regnery Publishing, and Penguin Books's Sentinel imprint. Its focus has broadened since Glikes's death in 1994.
