Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands was a reality television programme which was broadcast on Channel 4 on the popular teenage segment T4 and was produced by RDF Media. The original premise of the show was a social experiment for young adults before the big hit of Big Brother at the start of 2000. However there were several Shipwrecked projects before Battle of the Islands started hosted primarily by Andi Peters but changed to a narration from Craig Kelly.
The show occasionally has a presenter, but is usually narrated overlooking both tribes in a seven day cycle in which ten (soon to turn into thirty) castaways are placed on the Cook Islands in Polynesia and divided into two competing teams known as tribes and have been given basic survival tools to survive with: commonly a machete and several other items. The tribes are encouraged to build shelters to defend themselves from harsh elements and live off the local flora for nourishment. However both tribes are given canned food stuffs and a large quantity of rice.
Initial tribal divisions are based on what the producers believed to be a fair assumption and a rough distribution of age. In the first season there was a team of 3 girls
