MacArthur High School is perhaps best known for the stunning 1982-83 varsity basketball team led by coach Tom Milford which complied a 30-0 record in regular season play. The team was ranked number 5 in the state by the High School Basketball Coaches Poll. The team finally fell to Ft. Worth Dunbar in regional playoffs. Team members included Bryan Amason, Steve Coffman, Joe Doss, Andy Ellard, Preston Foster, Eric Green, Mike Kelly, Mike Nation, Brad Narrell, Mike O'Donnell, Rusty Troy and Mike Wallak. The team was the subject of an Irving Daily news article in the 1995 that claimed the team was the best example of basketball fundamentals and team play ever observed in a Texas high school team.
MacArthur was named a 2001-02 National Blue Ribbon School.
