'All Alone' is the only Six Feet Under episode which does not open with a "death of the week" (the final episode begins with a birth). Nate's death at the end of the previous episode is sufficient, and the episode begins simply with the Fisher family's grief.
In the hours following Nate's death from a brain hemorrhage, David copes with his pain by planning his brother's funeral. He explains to Brenda and Ruth that Nate wanted a green funeral with no embalming or casket, just burial in a plot of land that's protected by a nature preserve. Ruth objects strongly but David bluntly disregards this, determined to stick to his brother's wishes.
