Oncotype DX, created by Genomic Health, is a diagnostic test that quantifies the likelihood of disease recurrence in women with early-stage breast cancer and assesses the likely benefit from certain types of chemotherapy.
Oncotype DX was developed for women with early-stage invasive breast cancer who are ER+ and whose lymph nodes are negative (do not contain tumor). Typically in these cases, treatment with hormonal therapy, such as tamoxifen, is planned. Oncotype DX is not appropriate for use in patients with carcinoma in situ (precancerous) or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the breast).
Oncotype DX analyzes a panel of 21 genes within a tumor to determine a Recurrence Score.
