In 1966, author J. R. R. Tolkien sold film rights to The Hobbit to United Artists. The film rights then were acquired by producer Saul Zaentz, who in 1976 set up Tolkien Enterprises, a division of the Saul Zaentz Company, to administer film rights to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
