Simon Katanga is a fictional character in Raiders of the Lost Ark and played by George Harris. Katanga is a freight captain taking Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood, along with the Ark of the Covenant, to presumed safety in England. Nevertheless the ship is stopped en route by a Nazi U-boat who storm the vessel and take the Ark, and Marion, with them. Although threatened to have his boat "blown from the water" from a pugnaciously racist Nazi officer (who infamously calls Katanga a "savage"), Katanga and his crew are spared and watch with baited breath as Jones swims over to the German submarine. Katanga does not appear again in the film - nor any of the subsequent movies. When attending a showing of the film in Toronto, Canada, Harris' mother is reported to have exclaimed when Katanga is slurred: "my son ain't no savage."
