In Dudley, Arkansas George Kearns follows lover Paula Gray into the woods, where he is killed by a figure wearing a mask and wielding an axe. When Kearns is reported as missing and a witness claims to have seen a foxfire that night, agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigate. The agents find the ground burndt and a witch's peg. The local sheriff disclaims any crime occurring and thinks it was just people burning trash. After visiting with Kearn's wife Doris, the agents find that Kearns was about to recommend the local chicken plant, Chaco Chicken, be closed down for health violations.
