Porter is an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Texas within the metropolitan area. In 1980, its population estimated 8,000. Schools in Porter are operated by the New Caney Independent School District. Porter was founded in 1878 when railroad tracks were laid for what was to become known as the Houston East-West Transportation Company or simply The "HEW."
