Old Soldiers is an episode of X-Men: The Animated Series. It originally aired on February 22 1997. Wolverine thinks back to the time when he fought during World War II and teamed up with Captain America. Wolverine and Captain America must break into a Nazi establishment in order to rescue a kidnapped American scientist, and fight the Red Skull. Ultimately, Captain America and Wolverine are unsuccessful in rescuing the scientist. However, years later Wolverine is visiting the scientist's grave and encounters his daughter there. She explains to him that her father was actually working in secret to derail the Nazi atomic bomb project (tricking it into working on dead ends, etc.). Wolverine and Cap's "failed" rescue mission thus only served to make the Nazi leadership fully trust her father, and think that he had voluntarily defected. Therefore, this mission really was a success. On the scientist's tombstone, beneath engravings such as "husband", "father", and "scientist", Wolverine uses his adamantium claws to scratch in "hero", and then leaves.
