Music Domain Documentation

The Music domain contains recording artists, albums, and songs. Data found here is a combination of information sourced from MusicBrainz and Wikipedia. The data currently loaded is focused on English-language popular music. We encourage you to add new artists, albums, and songs if they’re missing. This domain also contains information about keys, chords, and other music-theoretical concepts.

Please note that albums of spoken word performances or audiobooks, though sharing some structures in common, do not belong in the Music domain. Some such have been inappropriately imported where they were not tagged correctly in MusicBrainz; please report these or un-type them as Musical Albums or their performers or authors as Musical Artists.

Types

  • Musical Artists are bands or individuals who perform or record Musical Albums or Musical Tracks. An artist may be a Musical Group Member and have a Musical Group Membership connecting them to another Musical Artist.
  • Musical Albums consist of Musical Tracks. The tracks may all be by the same Musical Artist, in which case the artist should be credited with the album; if the album is by multiple artists, each track may be credited to a different artist.
  • A Musical Track may be a recording of a Song. If the song has an independent existence, such as a classical composition or a traditional song, the Song may be a separate instance; however, if one particular recording is the definitive recording of the song (as the first recording by a singer-songwriter), then the Song and Musical Track may be the same instance.
  • In addition to the primary credited artist on an album, a Musical Artist may also make a Musical Contribution to a Musical Album or Musical Track. This contribution includes a Musical Performance Role, which may be the Musical instrument or Musical voice part performed by the artist.
  • A Musical Release is a subsequent rerelease of a Musical Album; it may be remastered or simply repressed and may contain bonus tracks, but contains mostly the same Musical Tracks as the initial album, and would generally be considered by fans of the artist to be the same album.
