Within Berkeley High School, there are several "small schools" which are learning programs with specific goals.

The SSJE exists with the understanding that there are challenging social and ecological problems facing the people of the world today. These problems and the discussion of their solutions constitute the focus around which our academics are centered. We go forward with the understanding that as humans living on the planet, we each have a responsibility to live in a way that allows for the creation and maintenance of healthy societies and healthy ecosystems. The discussion of the creation of these societies and ecosystems provides countless opportunities for deep, engaging and meaningful educational experiences.

Other Small Schools are Communication Arts and Sciences (CAS), Community Partnership Academy (CPA)  and the Arts and Hummanities Academy (AHA)
