Silence is a forthcoming film to be directed by Martin Scorsese ("Silence" was previously made into a film in 1971 by Masahiro Shinoda), from the novel by Shusaku Endo and adapted for screen by three-time collaborator Jay Cocks, a former newspaper film critic. The story follows two Jesuit priests on their mission to promote evangelism in 17th century Japan, where the Japanese government has plans to rid itself of its Christian faith. No definite casting decisions have been made. Scorsese has, although, mentioned that he would like to reunite with Daniel Day-Lewis and Harvey Keitel for the lead roles. If this would come to fruition, then this would be Scorsese's third collaboration with Day-Lewis (after The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York) and his sixth with Keitel (after Who's That Knocking at My Door, Mean Streets, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, and The Last Temptation of Christ).
