The story details the men and families of G Company, 24th Infantry Division, with a main sub-plot being Sgt. Warden’s (William Devane) ongoing affair with Karen Holmes (Natalie Wood), the wife of his commanding officer.
It is 1941 and Pvt. Robert E. Lee Prewitt (Steve Railsback) is new to G Company. He has personnel issues with some of the company’s officers, and becomes involved with Lorene Rogers (Kim Basinger), a local prostitute. Things take a turn for the worse when Pvt. Prewitt is sent to the stockade for a few months of what turns out to brutal mistreatment.
The mini-series reused some footage from Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) for the attack on Pearl Harbor.
