The United States qualified as the host nation, Italy (1), Netherlands (2) and Brazil (3) qualified by finishing in the top-three at the 1995 FIVB Men's World Cup, while Russia (Europe), Cuba (NORCECA), Argentina (South America), South Korea (Asia) and Tunisia (Africa) won their continental qualifying tournament. Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Poland each came through in one of the three Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, held in Espinho, Portugal, Munich, Germany and Patras, Greece (from May 3 to May 5, 1996).
