What are some examples you're dealing with? I believe they should be modeled as separate teams, for instance these are the minor league teams affiliated with the San Francisco Giants baseball team:
* AAA: Fresno Grizzlies, Pacific Coast League
* AA: Connecticut Defenders, Eastern League
* Advanced A: San Jose Giants, California League
* A: Augusta GreenJackets, South Atlantic League
* Short A: Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Northwest League
* Rookie: Arizona League Giants, Arizona League
This might suggest the need for a new property on sports team for 'affiliated teams' -
maybe it is more about a sports organization than about a team(german called "Verein"). There is an organization with at least one suborganization or section (german called "Abteilung"). For example take HSV, Hamburger Sportverein, it is famous for soccer but there are also section doing baseball, dancing, golf, triathlon.
the new property 'affiliated teams', i think, needs to be added to organization or even better non profit organization (because this IMHO the equivalent to german "eingetragener Verein, short e.V.". -
Perhaps the best way to accomplish what you're describing is to type these teams as organizations. The organization type already has the notion of parent and sub-organizations.
We could go a step further and assert that all sports teams are organizations by including that type on the sports team type, but I'm not sure yet that most teams should also be organizations. Its something to keep an eye on. -
What about college teams?
Each NCAA school has several different teams in different sports. This should be considered so freebase doesn't end up looking like "Illnois Fighting Illini - Football Team, Illinois Fighting Illini - Basketball Team, etc."

I'm not sure what the alternative to "Illnois Fighting Illini - Football Team", "Illinois Fighting Illini - Basketball Team" is. The naming is kind of ugly, but they really are separate teams, and do, I think need to be modeled that way. That is to say, the Illini football team needs the properties associated with the American Football Team type, and should not have the properties associated with the Basketball Team type.
