Law on the schedule for the month of January and ran its Thursdays 10:00 p.m. ET time slot. This was the second time slot for Homicide: Life in the Street in as many seasons.
Despite critical acclaim and award wins during the first season, lackluster ratings placed Homicide at risk of cancellation. The series was given only four episodes in the second season to determine whether to keep the show. Executive director Tom Fontana said it created pressure for the show's creators: "To tell you the truth, I think it's a little unfair only because, in this day and age especially, hour dramas need nurturing."
