On 26 February 2008 Google and five telecommunications operators (Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI, Pacnet, and SingTel) said in a joint statement that the 6,200-mile undersea fiber-optic cable, connecting the United States to Japan, will cost $300 million. The cable will have 5 fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 960 Gbit/s, and will be expandable to 8. This will give the cable a total capability of 7.68 Tbit/s.
The cable is being constructed by NEC and Tyco Telecommunications (a subsidiary of Tyco Electronics).
