Humanity is the idle aristocracy in a world run by slaves of four alien races, until one of those races, the Meks, revolt and start destroying the humans' castles.
Most of the nobles don't react to the revolt of the Meks, preferring to die instead of fighting. Only one of them, Xanten of Hagedorn castle, decides to react and fight the Meks. He searches out other humans who agree with his views, including humans living outside the Castle system.
Finally, after a short and hard battle Xanten and his allies win and send the surviving Meks to their native planet, Etamin 9.
