Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and raised in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Needles graduated from Waukesha's Catholic Memorial High School, in 1981. He was involved in football and basketball at Memorial. Needles then attended the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, receiving a B.S. degree in Radio/TV/Film, in 1985.
Prior to working with ABC 12 /ESPN, Needles took a job at a station in Wausau, Wisconsin, but returned to the Milwaukee area to work at WISN-TV Channel 12.
Needles is widely viewed as the most popular sportscaster in Milwaukee, thanks to his good sense of humor and humility.
